Belize is currently executing a strategic shift to move international arrivals beyond the primary hubs of Belize City and the coast. The "last-mile conversion" is the new priority: transforming an arrival at Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) into an overnight stay in the southern reaches of the country.

The catalyst for this shift is a surge in airlift. Starting October 26, 2026, BermudAir will connect BZE with Fort Lauderdale, Boston, Raleigh-Durham, the St Petersburg/Tampa Bay area, and Orlando Sanford. Additionally, WestJet will launch a weekly service from Winnipeg on December 14. While these flights land in Ladyville, the goal is to funnel this demand south to Punta Gorda via a 50-minute domestic flight, diversifying the tourist footprint and reducing pressure on over-visited coastal zones.

Cultural & Environmental Value

For the visitor, the real impact is a transition from "resort tourism" to "regenerative travel." The Toledo District is the heartbeat of Belize’s indigenous Maya culture and biodiversity, but it has historically lacked the infrastructure to handle mass arrivals.

To bridge this gap without compromising the environment, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has launched the Sustainable & Inclusive Belize (SAIB) programme. Backed by a US$15 million Inter-American Development Bank project (BL-L1041), the initiative provides grants of up to BZD 30,000 per business.

In the first cohort of 39 awardees, Toledo secured 7 recipients—representing 17.9% of the national total. This funding isn't for luxury expansion, but for essential eco-upgrades: solar-powered infrastructure, advanced water management, and culinary projects that highlight traditional indigenous ingredients. By investing in these MSMEs, Belize is ensuring that the increase in flight capacity leads to locally retained expenditure rather than leakage to international chains.
