U.S. budget deficit shrinks in first 7 months of fiscal year

The figures: The Treasury Department reports that while the federal budget deficit decreased during the initial seven months of the fiscal year, the projected deficiency for the entire year is expected to surpass that of the previous year.

The deficit for the current fiscal year stands at $855 billion, reflecting an 8% decline compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. April recorded a surplus of $210 billion, a month that is customarily characterized by substantial inflows of tax payments.

The annual decline of 9% in individual income tax refunds can be attributed, in part, to the suspension of Employee Retention Tax Credit payments. Last year, that credit increased refunds.

Thus far in this year, interest payments on the public debt have increased by 36% in comparison to the same period last year.
The fiscal year of the government commences in October and concludes in September.
The Congressional Budget Office stated in a recent report, “Although the deficit thus far in fiscal year 2024 is smaller than the shortfall during the same period last year, it appears likely that the deficit for the full year will end up being larger.”

Additional expenses associated with declared yet unaccounted-for student and calamity loans will contribute to the expansion of the deficit, as stated by the CBO. Additionally, the CBO noted that April revenue collections were below expectations.

Fiscal year 2023 incurred a deficit of $1.7 trillion.
