Different Types of Eye Surgery

Share post:

Anyone with bad eyesight will likely have thought about what surgeries and treatments they can get to fix their vision and stop being annoyed by glasses and contacts!

There are many types of procedures out there, and it can be difficult to research all of them to try and figure out which are most beneficial. As such, here is an informative list of all the different kinds of eye surgery and who can benefit from them.

1. Cataract Surgery

If you have cataracts, it means that your vision has a cloudy covering, making it hard to see. It is most common in older people, the result of broken-down proteins in the lens of the eyes.

Thankfully, the surgery to fix this condition is simple. The doctor will use small tools to replace the clouded lens with a new artificial clear one that will normally last the rest of your life.

2. Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is one of the most common eye operations. Many people who have to wear glasses or contacts opt for this kind of surgery because it’s quick, easy, and fairly low-cost, offering long-term results that repair vision. In basic terms, the surgery consists of a laser, which changes the shape of the cornea, making it so that you are able to see much more clearly.

Overall, the laser eye surgery price tag is usually affordable, but it can vary depending on the location of the clinic. However, this surgery is ultimately cheaper in the long run since it eliminates the need to see opticians and buy expensive glasses and contact lenses throughout life.

3. Cornea Transplant

Corneal transplants are only undertaken when people have eye problems caused by certain medical issues or if someone has a reoccurring corneal infection. Similar to cataract surgery, the doctor uses small tools to remove the part of the damaged cornea and then replace it with healthy tissue. In some extreme cases, they can remove almost all of the cornea.

4. Retina Surgeries

Retinal surgeries are for those with a retina that has become detached or torn. There isn’t an exact cause, but it is more common in older people as their eyes change and become weaker due to age.

There are a few different types of retina surgeries, including:

  • Vitrectomy
  • Scleral buckle
  • Pneumatic retinopexy

The kind of surgery you will need depends on how detached your retina has become and where it has found itself within your eye. In rare cases, you can also undergo multiple types of this surgery simultaneously; it all depends on your condition and the extent of the damage.

5. Squint Surgery

No, this surgery will not stop you from squinting! This procedure is for those who have trouble controlling their eye movements. It is also referred to as ‘eye muscle surgery’ as the doctor will move and fix the eye muscles in a new place to keep them properly lined up and balanced.

Ultimately, this operation isn’t the only way to correct squinting and eye muscle abnormalities; however, it is usually undertaken in the worst scenario or when a person has tried everything and nothing seems to work.
