Abu Dhabi Hosts Major Publishing Sector Transformation

From September 13th to 18th, the 2026 Abu Dhabi International Book Fair will serve as the primary launchpad for a new professional framework designed by the Emirates Publishers Association (EPA). This initiative is engineered to elevate the competitiveness of the UAE's publishing industry on a global scale, providing local publishers with direct access to international experts, advanced digital tools, and untapped foreign markets.

The program is not merely a series of exhibitions but a structured support system. It focuses on the critical need for publishers to pivot their business models to meet shifting reader demands while simultaneously amplifying the reach of high-quality Arabic-language literature. By facilitating new partnerships and introducing modern operational strategies, the EPA aims to transition the local industry from a reactive stance to a proactive leader in the global literary economy.

Bridging the Gap Between Content Production and Reader Expectations

The EPA opened its 2026 program with a high-level discourse on the evolving dynamics between those who produce books and those who consume them. Hosted on the Don Quixote stage, the panel titled “Publishing Today: Bridging the Gap Between What Publishers Produce and What Readers Expect” was conducted in coordination with PublisHer.

PublisHer, an international organization established by EPA Founder and Honorary President Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bin Sultan Al Qasimi, focuses on the empowerment and leadership of women within the publishing sphere. The organization provides essential mentorship, resources, and industry dialogue to dismantle systemic barriers facing women in the field.

The panel featured prominent industry voices, including Ameera BuKadra, EPA Board President and Co-founder of Ghaf Publishing, and Reem Madkour, Founder of Dardasha and recipient of the PublisHer x VISA “She’s Next” Grant 2025. The session was moderated by Asma Siddiq Al Mutawa, Founder and Chairperson of Al Multaqa Literary Salon and a member of the PublisHer Advisory Board.

The discussion centered on the necessity of evolving publishing models to align with digital transformation. Key areas of focus included:

  • Content Refinement: Adapting writing and editing styles to suit modern attention spans and preferences.
  • Audience Engagement: Utilizing data and direct feedback to build stronger bonds with readers.
  • Visual Presentation: Enhancing book design and packaging to compete in a saturated visual market.
  • Strategic Marketing: Moving beyond traditional advertising toward targeted, digital-first outreach.

Scaling Emirati Publishing Through International Matchmaking

To facilitate direct entry into foreign markets, the EPA has scheduled a specialized matchmaking event on the second day of the fair. Organized in partnership with the Nomad Cultural Foundation, this session is designed to connect Emirati publishers with international publishing houses.

This initiative moves beyond networking, focusing instead on concrete business outcomes such as the exchange of publishing rights, the identification of co-publication opportunities, and the sharing of operational best practices. By establishing these direct professional conduits, the EPA is enabling local publishers to understand the nuances of international market trends and adapt their catalogs for global distribution.

This effort is a core component of a wider strategy to increase the visibility of UAE-based intellectual property and ensure that Emirati authors and publishers have a sustainable presence in the global literary landscape.

Integrating Technology into Arabic Language Publishing

On September 15, the EPA will formalize a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Miqyas Al Dhad. This collaboration is specifically targeted at the advancement of Arabic-language publishing, with a focus on the scientific assessment of reading levels.

The partnership aims to solve a long-standing challenge in the industry: ensuring that content is accurately calibrated to the reader's proficiency level. To implement this, the EPA will host an interactive workshop demonstrating two primary technological tools:

  1. Text Analyzer: A tool that allows publishers to analyze the complexity of their Arabic text.
  2. Find a Book Platform: A system designed to match specific content with the appropriate reader demographic.

These tools enable publishers to classify their catalogs with precision, ensuring that educational and leisure reading materials are accessible and appropriate for their intended audiences, thereby increasing the overall literacy and reading efficiency across the region.

Shaping the Educational Ecosystem and Reading Culture

The EPA’s involvement extends into the academic and governmental spheres to ensure the sustainability of the reading culture in the UAE. HE Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association, is slated to participate in the “Global Educational Publishing” session, where he will analyze international trends currently reshaping how educational materials are produced and distributed.

Furthermore, HE Rashid Al Kous will contribute to the “Developing the Creative Ecosystem” discussion, an event organized by the Ministry of Culture. This session will explore the intersection of creator support and sustainable publishing environments, emphasizing the role of publishers as catalysts for cultural growth.

The association will also be a key participant in the Reading Retreat 2026. This event, a joint venture between the Ministry of Community Empowerment and the Ministry of Culture, serves as a review of the UAE’s progress in fostering national reading habits and will outline future policy initiatives to support the publishing infrastructure.

Why This Matters: The Shift Toward Data-Driven Publishing

For the professional publisher and the avid reader, these developments signal a fundamental shift in how books are conceived and delivered in the Middle East. The transition from traditional publishing to a "professional program" approach means that books will no longer be produced based on intuition alone, but through data-driven insights into reader behavior and linguistic proficiency.

From a logistical standpoint, the integration of tools like the "Text Analyzer" reduces the risk for publishers by ensuring their products meet the exact needs of their target audience, reducing waste and increasing sales. For the reader, this translates to a more personalized experience where content is perfectly aligned with their reading level, making the act of reading more rewarding and less frustrating.

Moreover, the focus on international matchmaking indicates that the UAE is positioning itself not just as a consumer of global literature, but as a significant exporter of cultural content. By professionalizing the "rights exchange" process, the EPA is creating a pathway for Arabic stories to reach a global audience, effectively turning local publishing houses into international media entities.
