Trump used to sell the perception of opulence. Now he just sells Trump.

Donald Trump’s sales proposal for decades was uncomplicated: He was the man who understood how to become wealthy.
This entailed instructing readers on how to attain wealth themselves in the form of a book, although the correlation between the sales figures of “The Art of the Deal” and tangible savings remains uncertain. In the realm of merchandise, Trump’s sales proposal revolved around the physical representation of his affluence: black marble, gilded fixtures, and, as supplementary points of differentiation, premium sirloin or wine.
In a sense, everything was gilded, as Trump’s offerings were predominantly of the middle-tier or lower quality, albeit presented with an illusion of sophistication and opulence. However, he was explicit regarding his offering and the target audience.

His product line has evolved in tandem with the shift in his target market.
Trump’s business and political careers are intricately intertwined. The level of public awareness he generated through his television program “The Apprentice” secured publicity for his political aspirations. His candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in 2015 was largely met with apathy until his remarks concerning immigrants incited a sensational backlash—not from fellow Republicans, but from his business associates.
In March 2016, after having secured the nomination and the presidency, Trump hosted an event at one of his Florida properties with the explicit purpose of promoting his line of products bearing his name. The inciting incident occurred when 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney delivered a caustic speech in which he lamented the failure of numerous Trump brands. As a result, Trump amassed an assortment of Trump-branded (and ostensibly Trump-branded) merchandise to showcase the prosperity of his empire.

“I own extremely successful businesses,” Trump insisted while speaking. He mentioned that he had submitted paperwork detailing his corporate empire, which “a great number of the press have inspected, and they have all been extremely, extremely impressed.” “I established an exceptional, exceptional corporation.”
As an illustration, he mentioned the multitude of employment opportunities he had established in New York City, as well as the Hudson River complex of structures that he regarded as “among the most prosperous real estate developments ever constructed.”
During that period, a line of apartment buildings bearing his surname along a congested thoroughfare served as one of the most conspicuous expressions of Trump’s influence in Manhattan. However, when he was elected president, New Yorkers, including some residents of those structures, were not pleased. Residents voted to have the word “Trump” removed from the building facades until it was no longer visible during his presidency.
This occurred in numerous locations, Central Park being one of them. The Washington Post searched for remnants of Trump’s brand partnerships in early 2018 and discovered that the majority of them had dissolved. I distinctly recall entering a Manhattan showroom in search of any unfinished merchandise bearing the Trump brand of furniture. I located a seat.
Even the infamous line of glossy ties that Trump endorsed as a derivative of his television program had ceased to exist. Trump continued to profit from the Trump Organization, which included foreign investors contributing millions to his hotel and real estate businesses. However, Trump as a brand? It was, in numerous locations, an absolute death omen.
Consider the substantial wager placed by the Trump Organization on a Manhattan hotel/condominium complex—a wager that was complicated in numerous respects. Potential clients flocked to the establishment subsequent to the inauguration of the building due to the presidency of Trump. Following its rebranding as the Dominick, commerce flourished.
Customers continued to be intrigued by the Trump brand, undoubtedly. The foundation that he had laboriously built up was not it. As a result of his transition to politics, the desired status he sought to attain also changed: from one of luxury to one of power. The Trump moniker was intended to represent luxury for decades. It now simply refers to Trump.
The Republican presidential front-runner traveled to Philadelphia over the weekend to promote an expensive pair of footwear bearing his name. The shoes are an exact embodiment of the Trump brand: the block-T on the side is gold, which covers nearly the entire upper. The only deviation from the gold is the high tip of the shoe, which features an American flag motif. The shoes retail for $399 and are titled “NEVER SURRENDER HIGH-TOP SNEAKER,” which alludes to Trump’s reaction upon receiving a criminal indictment.

Accompanying this declaration was a new fragrance line consisting of cologne and perfume bearing the name “Victory47,” which alluded to Trump’s aspiration to succeed to the presidency of the United States after having served as its 45th. (A less expensive line of red and white shoes features the letters “45” and “T” on opposite sides.) The cologne container is embellished with a miniature representation of Trump’s cranium.
Trump has previously endorsed cologne. Formerly packaged fragrances in bulky, subdued containers bearing the names “Empire” and “Success.” His head atop a towering gilded container is what it is now.
Additionally, among Trump’s post-presidency side hustles is a belated foray into the world of NFTs, ostensibly limited-supply digital works of art. Even though the NFT bubble had ruptured and left an adhesive residue on the digital economy long before Trump entered the fray, he nonetheless dove in. As part of an initial offering, supporters were able to purchase photo-shopped images of Trump engaging in a variety of red-state activities, such as hunting or operating a racecar. Later, he expanded this product line to include replicas of the suit he was wearing in the mugshot photo taken in Fulton County, Georgia.
Additionally, Trump’s business empire has developed in other respects. The partnership between the Trump Organization and Saudi-backed LIV Golf is undeniably profitable. Amidst these circumstances, the social media platform Truth Social was established; albeit not to further Trump’s brand, it functioned primarily as a platform for him to engage with his base.
However, it also mirrored the altered target audience of the Trump brand: individuals who are content to hear his thoughts on any subject, including real estate or, more frequently, the detrimental impact of non-Trump politicians on the nation.
Prior to ten years ago, Trump purportedly provided American consumers with a roadmap to extraordinary wealth. As a consequence of his choice to prioritize political power over that, the Trump Organization was compelled to modify its proposal. He shifted his focus from projecting the image of a prosperous business magnate based in Manhattan to that of a magnate from a red-state determined to reverse the course of America’s transformation.
His products evolved in tandem with his audience. A Trump supporter is no longer an individual seeking to indulge in a sophisticated sirloin at a posh New York hotel while faintly inhaling “Success.” Conversely, this individual is the type who believes that purchasing gold shoes signifies dissent towards the institutions of authority in the United States.
