The federal judge supervising a pregnancy discrimination case involving the 2016 campaign of Donald Trump granted approval to an effort by the former president and his team to change legal counsel. This involved engaging the services of a Maryland law firm, where a senior partner is accused of misappropriating millions of dollars attributed to the country of Somalia.

Judge Katharine Parker authorized the substitution of an attorney from Schulman Bhattacharya, LLC for the former legal representative of the Trump camp, LaRocca, Hornik, Greenberg, Kittredge, Carlin & McPartland, on Wednesday. Earlier this month, the former defense team requested that the lawsuit against the former president and his former top advisors be dismissed. They cited a “irreparable breakdown in the attorney-client relationship” in the suit, which was initially filed in 2019 by Republican operative Arlene “A.J.” Delgado. Delgado claimed that campaign leadership relieved her of responsibilities following the pregnancy of married advisor Jason Miller.

Parker ultimately permitted the campaign to substitute Schulman Bhattacharya, LLC, which declined to comment to The Daily Beast, despite initially rejecting the law firm’s abdication. However, while firm counsel Jeffrey Gavenman defends Trump, Steve Bannon, Reince Priebus, and Sean Spicer, one of the firm’s founding partners will be engaged in a legal battle to avoid incarceration.

Late in 2020, Jeremy Schulman, half of the eponymous team, was accused by the Department of Justice with utilizing forged documents to obtain $12.5 million in Somali state assets, which the central bank of the East African nation had ordered frozen amidst the country’s protracted civil conflict. The federal government asserts that Schulman and his accomplices used these forged materials to convince financial institutions and the New York State Comptroller that they could lawfully seize the nation’s sovereign investments as representatives of its transitional government, beginning in 2009.

Schulman was a shareholder in a different firm at the time that was cooperating with prosecutors. Prosecutors allege that Schulman misappropriated $3.3 million in commissions and expenses for his firm during this time.
The webpage of Schulman Bhattacharya LLC openly showcases Schulman’s contributions to, within, and in the vicinity of Somalia. Furthermore, Gavenman, the newly appointed attorney for the Trump campaign, vehemently defended his colleague and his firm against Delgado’s slams against the partner’s legal issues in an opposition to the substitution, as documented in a court filing.

“Plaintiff attempts to tarnish the undersigned and an entire law firm through association.” Gavenman wrote in a letter to the judge, “This insinuation, founded on mere allegations against one member of Schulman Bhattacharya, LLC, is unprofessional and borderline absurd.” “Mr. Schulman is presumed innocent despite the outcome of the indictment’s allegations; his impeccable professional standing and track record demonstrate that this presumption is not only obligatory but also merited.”

Furthermore, Schulman’s most recent effort to have the indictment dismissed on the grounds of alleged prosecutorial misconduct—the partner claims the prosecution provided the grand jury with “false and misleading testimony”—was also emphasized by Gavenman. Schulman has maintained his legal practice despite being indicted.
