All India Survey of Higher Education According to the (AISHE) Report 2019-20, the number of Institutes of National Importance (INIs) has grown by 80 per cent in the last five years. In the year 2015 the number of INIs was only 75 which has increased to 135 in 2020. Not only this, it has been found in the report that in the last five years, there has also been a 60 percent increase in the number of PhD students.
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ (Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’) expressed happiness over the AISHE Report 2019-20, tweeting, “I am happy to announce the release of the All India Survey 2019-20 Report on Higher Education. As you can see, we have improved the GER, the Gender Parity Index. The number of Institutes of National Importance has increased by 80% (from 75 in 2015 to 135 in 2020).”
According to the AISHE Report 2018-19, professional courses like MBA, MBBS, BEd and LLB have attracted more students than before. Talking about the statistics, the number of students doing MBA increased from 4 lakh 09 thousand 432 in 2014-15 to 4 lakh 62 thousand 853 in 2018-19. Similarly, the number of B.Ed students was 6 lakh 57 thousand 194 in 2014-15 which has increased to 11 lakh 75 thousand 517 last year i.e. an increase of about 80 percent.
On the other hand, the number of students taking admission in courses like BTech and MTech has come down significantly. The number of people pursuing master’s degrees in technology courses has dropped by more than half in the last five years. If we look at the figures, in the year 2014-15 there were 2 lakh 89 thousand 311 students whereas in 2018-19 this number has come down to 1 lakh 35 thousand 500. According to the AISHE report, the number of students in B.Tech has fallen by 11 percent from 42 lakh 54 thousand 919 to 37 lakh 70 thousand 949.
