Kapil Dev, the former captain of the Indian team, seems to have some similarities with the handing over of captaincy to his Rishabh Pant at an early age. Rishabh Pant has been given the command of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League at the age of 23. Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of IPL 2021 due to a shoulder injury and after this the left-handed wicket-keeper batsman has been named as captain.
Kapil was 23 years old when he was given the command of the Indian team. Under his captaincy, India won the first World Cup title in 1983 when he was 24 years old.
Kapil is of the opinion that Rishabh Pant will be made the captain of Delhi Capitals, that the senior players will have to help this young captain on the field.
Kapil Dev told a news news channel, ‘If senior players support him, it will not be so difficult for him. I too was made a captain at such a young age. The coach of Ricky Ponting (Delhi Capitals) can only play his role in the dressing room. Once the team is on the field, the captain’s thoughts matter the most. Senior players like Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan will have to support the young captain. Sometimes there is no support and we have to wait for a few matches.
Delhi Capitals had many experienced options in addition to Pant. It includes the names of Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin and Steve Smith. All have represented teams in the IPL before. However, the franchise decided to play bets on Pant.
Kapil, however, believes that it will be difficult for Pant to win the trophy for Delhi in his first season as a captain.
He told ABP News, ‘Yes, Delhi’s Trophy Jeetan has a 25-26% chance. I don’t think there are more chances because it would mean that he is better than the captains of the rest of the teams. He is the new captain, he needs a lot of experience. But it will be very difficult to win the title.
