The issue of extradition of Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi arose at a digital summit between India and Britain on Tuesday and Prime Minister Narendra Modi insisted that people involved in economic crime should be sent back to the country soon for hearing. India has been insisting on extradition of Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi to Britain over the hearing regarding their alleged involvement in financial fraud related cases.
Sandeep Chakraborty, Joint Secretary (Western Europe) in the Foreign Ministry, told reporters that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson mentioned that Britain would make every effort to extradite the economic offenders. Chakraborty said that the two leaders discussed the subject of extradition of economic offenders and Prime Minister Modi said that the culprits should be sent back to the country soon for trial.
He said that Prime Minister Johnson said he was facing some legal hurdles due to the nature of Britain’s criminal justice system, but he was aware of this and would make every effort to ensure that these people were extradited soon. Asked if Britain had asked to withdraw its illegal Indians, Chakraborty on Tuesday mentioned the signing of cooperation between the two countries on immigration and transit. He said that India is against illegal immigration, as it legitimately harms immigration as well as indicated that it would take back those who did not get nationality or did not get a housing permit.
