Leaders in health care warn that millions will lose coverage during the Trump administration

Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the media at the end of the day during his trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments at Manhattan Criminal Court on May 10, 2024 in New York City. Healthcare leaders are warning a second Trump presidency could cause millions of Americans to lose healthcare coverage.

Health care leaders are apprehensive that millions of Americans could lose health coverage should Trump seek a second term in office.
The bipartisan National Security Leaders for America expressed their apprehensions in a statement published this week regarding the affordability of health care for the American people in the event that Trump is re-elected.

“Our fears will be realized if Donald Trump is elected president,” the organization said in a statement on Thursday. “Under Trump, the cost of healthcare for American families would soar, and millions of people would be denied access to care entirely.” Although his precise policies are, at best, ambiguous, the harm he would cause is evident from his track record and his rhetoric.Everyone concerned about the cost and accessibility of health care is urged to prevent Trump from assuming the presidency by this organization.

Their particular concern pertains to the ongoing implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Medicaid eligibility was expanded and millions of uninsured Americans were granted access to health insurance under the law.

Amid his presidency, Trump reduced funding for consumer assistance navigators by 84 percent and outreach by 90 percent, resulting in a decline in enrollment among eligible individuals, in addition to his unsuccessful effort to repeal the ACA. Trump reduced the ACA enrollment period from six weeks to six weeks during his presidency.

As for his ongoing campaign, Trump maintains his pledge to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Furthermore, the premium subsidies of the law are set to expire in 2025, providing the incoming president with an opportune moment to enact substantial reforms.

The presidency of Trump brought about significant modifications to the reproductive health services that were accessible nationwide. The court reversed Roe v. Wade subsequent to the nomination of conservative justices to the U.S. Supreme Court, thereby empowering states to independently address the matter of abortion access and, in numerous states, criminalize the procedure.

“We believe that supporting Donald Trump would result in healthcare that is more hazardous, expensive, and inaccessible,” reads a statement from National Security Leaders for America. “A second Trump administration, in our opinion, would be detrimental to the health of American families,” It is strongly recommended that all Americans reject him and his policies.

A number of prominent figures in the healthcare industry, including former U.S. Army Surgeon General Ronald Blanck, Andrew Gurman, the former president of the American Medical Association, and Omar Atiq, the president emeritus of the American College of Physicians, endorsed the statement.
Trump was contacted by Newsweek for comment.

Alex Beene, an instructor of financial literacy at the University of Tennessee at Martin, stated that while the concerns expressed by these health care executives are indicative of Trump’s previous actions while in office, many electors may be dissatisfied with the price increases they’ve encountered since the passage of the ACA.

“Some voters attribute the problem to the changes it implemented,” Beene told Newsweek. “A voter who is concerned about pricing can only look in one direction: upwards.” If one is a voter who is concerned about the availability of coverage and insurance, then the statements put forth by these leaders merit considerable contemplation.

Although the specific health care policies that Trump might pursue during a re-election remain uncertain, the elimination of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) remains a probable objective, according to Michael Ryan, a finance expert and the proprietor of michaelryanmoney.com.

“His attacks on the law during his first four years, coupled with aggressive moves like expanding short-term and association plans that allowed insurers to reject those with pre-existing conditions, it all points to an agenda that could severely undercut health care access and affordability,” Ryan indicated to Newsweek.
Ryan further stated that eliminating the ACA safety net without a suitable substitute would cause significant disruption to the health care coverage of millions of Americans, thus voters have good reason to be concerned.

“If we need a reminder of why good health insurance coverage is so important to us, think back to just a few short years ago,” Ryan pointed out. “A once-in-a-lifetime pandemic reminded us how quickly medical crises can upend everything.”
