Concerns are mounting for the Biden administration concerning the efficacy of President Joe Biden’s efforts to persuade his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, to pursue a course of action that reduces civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip.

Senator Chris Van Hollen expressed these skepticisms on ABC’s This Week on Sunday. The Maryland Democrat, whose state the president is scheduled to visit in the coming days amidst the devastation caused by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, clarified that the Israeli prime minister was essentially “pointing the finger” at the US president in reference to the Israeli military’s alleged offensive in Rafah and its assault on Gaza. From conflict further north, millions of refugees have escaped to the city, which is now densely populated with civilians. While criticizing the ongoing unconditional arms supply policy of the United States to the Israeli government, it is worth noting that he abstained from voting against a February supplemental aid package that integrated military assistance for both Israel and Ukraine.
Mr. Van Hollen stated on Sunday, “Netanyahu continues to essentially give the president of the United States the finger, and we are sending more bombs.”

He stated that Israel’s “obligation” and “right” to defend itself following the attack on October 7 did not “extend to unnecessarily restricting assistance in Gaza.”
The senator continued, “You could certainly halt the atrocities of this humanitarian catastrophe.”
In February, the senator from Maryland voted with every member of the Democratic caucus in the US Senate, excluding Bernie Sanders, to support a $95 billion supplemental assistance package for Israel and Ukraine. However, he demanded at the time that the president “hold Mr. Netanyahu’s government more accountable for its actions” and claimed that the prime minister had thus far “largely disregarded his requests.”

His most recent critique follows the Biden administration’s partial retreat on sanctions against far-right settlers in Israel who are accused of illegal land seizures and violent assaults against Palestinians. The US Treasury Department clarified in a letter that Israeli banks were not obligated to freeze the accounts of sanctioned individuals in order to conduct business with the United States.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich was among the members of Mr. Netanyahu’s far-right coalition who were enraged by the sanctions. Mr. Smotrich, who has been subject to allegations of employing bigoted rhetoric and rejecting the existence of a Palestinian people, made a solemn commitment to retaliate against the US measures by targeting the economies of the West Bank and Gaza.

Since its inception, the Israeli military operation in Gaza has claimed the lives of over 31,000 individuals, a significant number of whom are minors. International aid organizations are currently issuing alerts regarding the occurrence of a humanitarian catastrophe throughout the region, which may culminate in the emergence of a widespread famine.
