Toxic haze has migrated across maritime borders, affecting visibility and air safety in Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.

The scale of the emergency is evident in the mobilization of the Indonesian Health Ministry, which has deployed 314 health workers to seven affected provinces. Six of these regions have already activated disaster-emergency preparedness systems. In South Sumatra, BMKG (the meteorological agency) reported that many areas experienced 31 to 60 consecutive days without rain during August, with rainfall remaining below normal into September. The human cost is stark. In Central Kalimantan, cases of acute respiratory infections (ISPA) jumped from 402 to 716 in just seven days. For visitors, the impact extends beyond respiratory health; smoke disrupts flight schedules, reduces visibility for road travel, and renders outdoor nature excursions dangerous.

While Kalimantan remains the primary epicenter due to Borneo's geography, satellite monitoring confirms active fires in Sumatra and Java, meaning the risk is widespread across the archipelago.

  • Gear Up: Carry N95 or P2 respirators. Standard surgical masks do not filter the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) found in wildfire smoke.
