A significant portion of Donald Trump’s campaign funds are being consumed by legal fees; one of the organizations that has contributed to these expenses spent close to $3.7 million last month.
According to data released by the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the Save America political action committee (PAC) expended approximately three out of every four dollars it raised during the same period in March.
It occurs on the same day that Trump begins witness testimony in a number of legal cases, including his trial into allegations he attempted to conceal a $130,000 hush-money payment to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels on Monday. Trump refutes every allegation levied against him.The expenditure by Save America on legal fees is comparable in magnitude to the total of $3.7 million incurred by Trump’s campaign committee in March. It follows a $29.2 million expenditure by President Joe Biden’s campaign in March, which included an onslaught of media buys in swing states.
Save America, an independent organization that served as Trump’s primary fundraising platform prior to his candidacy announcement, disclosed in March that it had received slightly more than $10,000 from donors. It was able to cover expenses by receiving a $5 million reimbursement of funds it had previously contributed to MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting Trump’s campaign.
Save America has now recouped over $52 million of the $60 million it had previously donated to MAGA Inc., drastically reducing the amount of funds available for MAGA Inc. to spend on television advertisements supporting Trump.
Save America has spent more than $59 million on attorney fees since the beginning of 2023, according to its filings. However, the organization has not disclosed the exact amount it has spent on each of Trump’s legal cases.
However, it may be difficult for the former president to match the expenditures of Vice President Biden in the run-up to November. Since the start of the year, Biden has allocated $45.2 million towards media advertising, compared to Trump’s $6 million. At the beginning of April, the principal campaign committee of Mr. Biden had amassed $85.5 million in its war chest, whereas the principal campaign account of Mr. Trump had $45.1 million.
However, despite the apparent decline in Trump’s fundraising efforts from small donors, he has conducted fundraising events in recent weeks to pursue large donors, assisting the Republican Party in March in raising over $20 million, which is nearly double the amount raised the previous month, according to a report released by the party on Saturday.
