Hard Numbers: Trump’s independent voters, Supreme Court's refusal to hear protest case, Singapore’s new PM, Samsung’s new chipmaking hub, Tesla’s layoffs, Beijing’s half marathon scandal

36% of independent voters, according to a recent survey, would be “less likely to support [Donald] Trump” if he were to be convicted on any of the 34 felony charges outlined in the hush money case currently being prosecuted in New York City.

The Supreme Court rejected a Fifth Circuit Court case on Monday, which would have effectively nullified the right to protest in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. This maintains the lower court’s ruling that the First Amendment right to protest in these three southern US states is in jeopardy if a single participant at a mass demonstration commits an illegal act, thereby exposing the organizer to potentially ruinous financial repercussions.

20: On May 15, Lee Hsien Loong, the son of Singapore’s founding patriarch Lee Kuan Yew, will resign as prime minister after nearly two decades in office. Lawrence Wong, who has served as both Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, has been designated as Lee’s heir apparent for the previous two years. As the People’s Action Party loses support, Singapore may experience its first genuinely competitive elections as early as later this year, following nearly six decades of political dominance.

In order to increase domestic semiconductor production in the United States, the Biden administration may award Samsung, one of the largest chipmakers in the world, up to $6.4 billion in grants to finance a new manufacturing center and expand an existing site in Texas.

10: To reduce costs, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla announced on Monday that it would lay off more than 10% of its workforce (approximately 14,000 people), and a longstanding senior executive tendered his resignation. EV manufacturers in Europe and Asia have been generating an increasing number of new models.

The Beijing half marathon is currently under investigation by its organizers into online video footage that seemingly depicts three East African athletes conceding the race to a Chinese competitor. The motivations behind the actions of the two Kenyans and one Ethiopian remain obscure.
